Hello! I’m Mia (they/them), an experimental multidisciplinary artist from Toronto, Ontario. From university degrees in Fashion (BDes 2021, MA 2024) to working over 7 years as a multimedia freelancer, I’m now working as a full-time Digital Marketing & Communications Specialist for my local art supply store leading social media video production and other marketing initiatives. I offer freelance services across all my disciplines for past clients such as Museum of Toronto, Queens of Dim Sum, Parkdale Activity-Recreation Centre (PARC), Toronto Metropolitan University, various local drag performers, and more. Born and raised in Toronto, I share a sentimental relationship with my community, love working close to home, and greeting familiar faces every day.
After over 7 years as a working professional, I’ve experienced countless permutations of the “creative” role, sometimes all at the same time. My varied experience has taught me the skills of a copywriter, social media manager, event planner, researcher, content producer, and so much more. I’m passionate about the creative process and I do my best work when I understand the moving parts and how my role affects others. As a result, I gravitate towards creative leadership roles for my strengths in conceptual thinking, organizational planning, and collaboration. My skill for problem solving is innate and automatic, and I put a lot of time and effort into mapping all possible pathways. With high confidence in my skills, experience, and accountability, I bring a confident and reliable voice to any project.
I’ve been a practicing artist for over 10 years. Since high school, I’ve dreamed of ways to bring my artistic practice to life, and often got to execute them. In my practice today, I prioritize the creative process, experimentation, and the joy of creating. My style is balanced within its colourful and striking aesthetic, considerate of texture, composition, contrast, and negative space. Everything has a purpose, even if it’s to be left open for interpretation, or simply for joy. I thrive in the spaces between juxtapositions to bring balance to the random and unexpected, pairing design principles with absurdist creativity. My artistic background and nature play a huge role in my approach to design and other creative roles.
My work grows and changes with me because it’s an inherent part of who I am. The constants in all these variables are my attraction to sharp shapes and colours, and hopefully something that appeals to the human part of all of us. I feel like we’re often put into situations that repress our humanity. I would like my work to reject that, and say: “You’re welcome here, as you are.” When I’m not busy working, I’m usually ideating, working on a backburner project, playing video games, strumming my guitar, making art, singing in the shower, or plotting ways to resist and abolish systems of oppression!
I’m a textbook Capricorn: focused on my career and growth since childhood, encouraged to pursue what I love to its fullest. At the time, I didn’t realize the list of pursuits would become so long! Having computer access from a young age, I was designing tri-fold pamphlets on Microsoft Publisher for my birthday parties. I watched a ton of anime and learned to draw like my favourite authors. My dad loved music; I learned to sing some mean karaoke like him and even picked up some instruments down the line. Everything that I’ve ever tried and loved growing up, I do now, and continue working hard to polish and refine for my own enjoyment. If I’m putting work out into the world, I would want everyone else to have as much fun as I do.
